When did you start to paint and how/when did you come to the style in which you now paint?
I started drawing and painting when I was five years old and haven't stopped yet and don't intend to. My father kept my first drawing which I found in a little box many years later. That was a fun discovery!
Finding one's "style" or technique sometimes takes time, as it did me. I paint in a realistic style because that is what I see. I want to capture the splendor of that majestic mountain, the personality of a blossom, or just the way my kitty looks at me. How fun is it that God put all those things right here so I can paint them.
What's your favorite subject(s)?
I do paint a variety of subjects but, I love painting flowers because of the amazing colors and shapes; the sunlight interacting with the patterns of shadows dancing on the petals and leaves, but my absolute favorite thing is when paint meets with wet paper creating that moment of wonder and a shape starts to emerge right out of the paper. That makes my heart beat a little faster and I can't wait to see the finished painting.
Do you paint from photos, sketches or live/dead models?
I snap a lot of photographs. I like to compose and find my center of interest right in the camera. I look for subjects that makes me take a second look and gives me inspiration to put that on paper. I hope that the viewer will take the time to see the beauty that I saw. I don't follow the color paths in the photo but use colors to make a painting come alive. Still subjects are a fun challenge, although they don't move around, they do tend to have a short table life which means, I need to paint, now! making every day a beautiful day to paint.
